School Talks

My perspective on politics goes well beyond the ten (fantastic) years I spent teaching it in classrooms. I bring politics alive through my life experiences of, for instance, how I settled a violent dispute between armed factions of the Kosovo Liberation Army, helped illiterate murderers vote in a high-security prison in revolutionary Ukraine, witnessed political executions in Central Asia, observed ballot-stuffing by machinegun-wielding thugs, frustrated spies, explored the radioactive wasteland of Chernobyl, and laughed with the comedian who was imprisoned for telling jokes in Myanmar. These dramatic stories, and more, enliven my talks on how revolutions succeed and fail, how dictators cheat in elections, and the new Cold War.

Intellectual rigour is at the heart of my talks honed from many years teaching Politics at Merchant Taylors’ School, latterly as Head of Department, helping dozens of students gain A*s and Oxbridge places. I communicate with clarity, and nurture the political literacy that students need to play an informed role in our democracy through the inspiring tales of how voting and political courage can change the world.

Talks about the inspiring individual actions that can change the world, and why and how to resist oppression.
